08 Mar Abolition – Give yourself out of debt
Congratulations on reaching it this far on the journey of being free. Today’s devo is a bit longer – but so important. Please take the time to read it.
One of the most powerful tools we have this side of heaven is the tithe. We have already established that bondage is spiritual (Rom. 8:15). You cannot fight spiritual battles with natural weapons! That is why so many people remain in the same cycle of defeat year after year. The way you can break the cycle of debt is by giving yourself out of it. The tithe is your surety!
Hebrews 7:8-10 (NKJV)
Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. 9 Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
If we read this whole chapter in context one major truth stands out for me:
We are giving our tithes to our surety. We are giving our tithes to our High Priest – JESUS! On earth mortal men receive tithes – that is the physical act of giving your tithe to the institution of the Local Church. But the verse continues: “but THERE He receives them…”
What is that talking about? This tells me that your tithe is spiritual! Tithing is so much more than just a physical act because the writer of Hebrews clearly states that JESUS IS RECEIVING YOUR TITHE! (The tithe MUST BE RECEIVED.) This verse tells me that we cannot reduce the tithe to a mere carnal thing.
The verse continues further: “of whom it is witnessed that He lives.” OUR TITHE IS A TESTIMONY THAT JESUS IS ALIVE. Our tithe is part of our witness or our testimony that we serve a living God. Those who argue that there is no tithing in the New Testament are greatly deceived.
Tithing is a powerful spiritual tool and I believe it is one of the keys to see you delivered from the cycle of debt. It forces us to NOT put our trust in banks or loans or credit cards which will drown you in interest rates BUT to put our trust in God. Remember that Jesus is the recipient of your tithe – this way you bring Him into your financial life. You are putting your faith in Him. You are making Him the centre of your financial life. And WHEREVER JESUS IS CENTER HEAVEN OPENS UP.
“Well Pastor Norman, I have so much debt that I cannot afford to give.” That reasoning will keep you in the cycle of debt. The Bible instructs us to tithe on our income – as long as you receive an income via your salary or your business – you can tithe. Remember that in God’s eyes the 10% represents the whole (Rom. 11:16). When you give the tithe, the rest is blessed and protected.
Put your trust in Him today.
