“Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life.” Romans 8:5–8 (The Message)
When our self-worth is not in Jesus Christ, we will spend our lives with performance issues! Our worth will be determined by how successful we are: How few or how many mistakes we’ve made or not made – how beautiful we are – how big my business is – how many people adore me – how educated I am – how much money I have in the bank. How much I’m DOING!
We have a misplaced identity of what success and failure is. The root of all of this is what we believe about righteousness. If keeping the Law is our basis for righteousness, then it is the basis for receiving the promises of God. In other words, our performance is the basis of getting our prayers answered. Our performance becomes the basis of God’s protection and experiencing peace with God. But this is not true.
If our security is based on our own performance, we will always be insecure because we will always fall short. Let us place our security in Jesus’ performance today. And His most important performance was what He did for us on the Cross. We are righteous in HIM!
