27 Aug Immersed in the Word of God
Jesus put a high premium on those who lived immersed in His teachings, calling them His disciples. Why was it so important to Him? Because living in His Word will yield certain results. Mostly that we will know the truth and it will make us free.
John 8:31-32 (NKJV)
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
A disciple is a follower of a specific teaching who has put themselves under the discipline of the teacher. As disciples of the Lord, we follow His teachings and apply His training in our lives.
The word ‘abide’ used here means ‘to stay, to reside, to continue to live in’. So this verse means that when we continually live in the Word of God, we truly are His disciples.
To gain the ultimate freedom that the Word of God offers, we need to do more than just hear it. There are millions of Christians on the planet who hear the Word but it does nothing for them. How can that be? It is because the truth has no effect if we don’t believe it, assimilate it into our hearts and make it part of the very core of our lives.
We need to continually LIVE in the Word. Our opinions must bow their knees to Jesus. That is the only way to a life of true freedom and power. Freedom from harmful habits and the power to overcome damaging thinking-patterns. As we immerse ourselves in the truth contained in the Bible by reading it, hearing it explained, thinking about it and memorising it, it can truly make us free. That is why being planted in a local church is so important.
Let’s pray: Dear Lord Jesus, open my eyes that I may see wondrous things in Your Word today. Let me see YOU in the Bible and help me to really take Your truth to heart and live in it continually. Thank you, Holy Spirit, that You are my teacher and my guide to help me understand the Bible. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
