12 Dec God still speaks today
Most of us want to hear God’s voice. But how do you know that it is God speaking to you, or last night’s pizza?
Fortunately, we find several useful principles for discerning God’s voice in the Bible.
Romans 8:14 says that the children of God are led by the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, counsellor and guide. Jesus Himself said that the Holy Spirit would give us messages from Him. But still, how do I know that the inner conviction I have, is really the Holy Spirit speaking to me?
You need Scriptural confirmation.
Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
The Holy Spirit will not prompt you with an instruction or idea in your heart that contradicts the written Word of God. Many times we agonise over a relationship or business decision but the answer is already in the Bible. This is why knowing God’s word is crucial in decision making.
Our heavenly Father usually leads us step by step. Only after we obey the first prompting, does He give us the next step. This requires trust in Him! And that is what He wants: a continual relationship with us. Knowing humans, if He gave us the full plan upfront, we may run off and try to do it our way without Him!
As you study and meditate on the Word of God you will become familiar with God’s heart and His voice. The Spirit and the Word work together. Allow them to.
Let’s pray: Father God, I desire to know and hear Your voice. Thank you that You DO speak to me through the Bible and by the Holy Spirit. Please teach me to discern Your voice from among the many pieces of information that bombard me daily. Give me a deeper understanding of Your written Word. Show me Yourself in Scripture. Thank you that I can trust Your guidance because You love me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
