03 Sep First things first
Keeping God first is key to living a happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable life (Psalm 1:1). But how do I do this? By applying the principle of firstfruits. Right through the Bible, we see that the first things are very important to God – the firstborn, the first part of the week, the day, the crop, the year.
What we put first shows what is important to us. And nothing shows what we value more than where we spend our money!
Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV)
Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
These verses are clear: When you give honour where honour is due, you get a reward. We show honour to God by giving the first ten percent of all our income to Him by giving it to His representation on earth: the church.
Why is firstfruits so important? Because it is the spiritual principle by which God ultimately delivered us: Jesus Christ, His innocent firstborn Son. Jesus Himself is God’s own firstfruit offering. God doesn’t ask us to do anything that He is not willing to do, or hasn’t done, Himself.
There is incredible power in giving God the firstfruits in our lives. You can try it and see. Spend the first moments of your day with Him and see how your day becomes filled with peace and hope. Spend the first day of the week worshiping Him at church and see how your whole week pulls into order. Give Him the first ten percent of your income and see His blessing and increase manifest on your finances and all your possessions.
You may ask: why does God need the first 10% of my money if everything on earth belongs to Him already? Well, He isn’t really interested in your money. He is interested in your heart. In your whole life. He wants us to keep our hearts focussed on Him and the best way to do that is by tithing in His kingdom. Ultimately tithing is not for God; it is for us.
I want to strongly recommend that explore these powerful truths by studying Scripture. Something that will aid you in this is the new book by Pastor Robert Morris named: Beyond Blessed. You can get your copy here.
