12 Mar Abolition – The truth about tithing
My friend, I want to congratulate you on participating in this series. My prayer for you is that this revelation will become clearer to you than ever before.
Today I want to turn your attention to some truths about tithing that will hopefully both challenge and establish you in them. There is great misconception on tithing in the church today. The result is great confusion and great lack in the Body of Christ. As a pastor I see many people suffering because of this. They suffer spiritually and physically. Remember: God is NOT the Author of confusion! God is also not a respecter of person’s; but He is a respecter of principle!
Malachi 3:8–12 (NKJV)
8 ‘Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’
In tithes and offerings.
9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing thatthere will not be room enough to receive it.
11 ‘And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,’ says the Lord of hosts; 12 ‘and all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,’ says the Lord of hosts.
Here are some truths we can draw from this passage:
#1 The tithe is NOT yours!
The tithe is for the storehouse: God’s House. (Not your gardener, some TV ministry, or the beggar at the traffic light – it belongs where you get your spiritual food from.)
A few years ago the pastor in whose church I grew up committed suicide due to slander. One of his former colleagues falsely accused him of stealing money from the church in which he had served faithfully for 25 years. Unfortunately this pastor took the accusations and condemnation into his heart and the burden became too much for him. Some of the congregants went so far as to phone the church office demanding their ‘tithes’ back because of the accusations! People do things like this because they don’t know Scripture.
Each local church will stand accountable before God on how they handle God’s money given by His people, but the Scriptural truth remains – the tithe belongs to God. (The denomination in which the abovementioned pastor served did a formal investigation and found him innocent of any wrongdoing.)
#2 Tithing is not a monetary transaction between you and a ministry/church.
You are not paying for a ‘service’. In the church we are NOT consumers – we are worshipers! The tithe first of all belongs to God and this is your worship to Him. God’s heart is that there will be food in his house. Food – literally. Food – spiritually. The purpose of the tithe is clear in Scripture.
#3 Tithing is a spiritual transaction between you and God. It is a covenant matter!
Tithing first of all enforces the blessing upon your life. It opens up the floodgates! Flooding occurs when there is no room for the water to be contained. It testifies that Jesus is alive! As people see that you are TRULY blessed – it is a reflection upon God’s goodness and His Kingdom. When we don’t tithe – there is a double robbing taking place! You rob God’s house, but you also rob your own house from all the benefits that the tithe brings.
JL Craft (Craft Cheese), who tithed 25% of his income to Christian causes, said: ‘The only investment I ever made which paid consistently increasing dividends, is the money I have given to the Lord.’
May you increasingly experience the Lord’s blessing in this area of your life.
